With the modern miracle of the Internet I think I'd check various State
Carnivals, Festivals, Parades, tourist attractions and schedule the trip
so you can spend a little time out of the van enjoying yourselves without
adding bunches of miles to your trip. (Most travel clubs and AAA can
supply attractive routing for free. and offer discount coupons for
camping. RVing magazine is full of Camping Discounts).
Almost every state has Spring / Summer Events that range from Bean
Festivals, Jazz Festivals, Art Festivals and just all out Food Feasts
events.
I tend to follow the Food Festivals like the Shrimp Festival in Morgan
City LA or New Orleans. I'd really like to see the annual Pumpkin
throwing after Thanksgiving and attend the Lobster Festival in Maine or
Massachusetts.
Either is a bit of a drive from Dallas TX so I just attend the local
festivals within 200 miles of Dallas but Spring events are abundant so if
your gas card is in good standing they're hard to resist, especially when
you're driving your motel room and favorite restaurant.
If you happen to go through Nashville TN .......... definitely go to the
Opryland Hotel and spend an afternoon in their Atrium. FREE.
If you go through Cincinnati, visit the Royal Netherlands Hotel
(downtown) wonderful restaurant and bar with Art Deco of the very highest
quality.
With anything I suggest here you can check it out for your particular
tastes over the Internet.
In my trip to Ft Lauderdale from Dallas I managed to kill ten days on
getting there by attending events and don't think I added more that 100
miles to the Mad Man Driving Route.
