According to the charts I found it's 130 hp @ 5600 rpm and 137 ft-lbs @ 4400 rpm. (1992 specs)
So, the 2.3L engine in my '88 Audi 90 makes 130 hp with 139 ft-lbs of torque. That's 139 ft-lbs at 3500 rpm which is much more suitable for Vanagon than the Subaru power curve. These engines are cheap and relatively plentiful.

So, the 2.3L 20V Audi I-5 Makes 163 hp with 157 lb-ft of torque. 130 ft-lb of torque is available by 2000 rpm. Good, tractable power.

So the SVX is very limited edition engine. The engineering of this flat-6 does peg my geek-meter, however. It is impressive even if replacement parts may be hard to find.
While we're all dreaming you could throw the 2.2 L 20V turbo I-5 Audi motor in there with 225 underrated hp. With a few easy mods you've got 250hp.

Yep, the I-5 is all about smooth and 'torquey' power, and above all reliability. My Audi has 360 thousand miles on the original, untouched engine. She still runs very well.
No argument on fitment of the Subaru boxer which seems to be their greatest asset.
But why the heck would I want just a 4-banger Subaru in the back if my Vanagon? I can rebuild my WBX to Lilley-spec for that money. This is like religion, a subject that's difficult to discuss without associated lynchings and extraditions. A tresspass is easier to excuse if one is selling one's soul for 6, count'em SIX, cylinders, a'la the SVX.
