Subject: Visser From SA to Attend Mid Atlantic Bus Van Fest
Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii"
<html>
<font size=3>This email is to let everybody know that we have a
distinguished guest from South Africa, Jan Visser, planning to attend Tom
Forhan's house near Washington DC this coming Saturday for the Mid
Atlantic holiday fest from 1:30 to 5:30pm.<br>
<br>
In addition, guests can check out Tom's Syncro with large impressive mud
tires and 6.17 final drive gears. Tom will also be demonstrating how this
vehicle can actually drive over his waist-high stone wall at the
event.<br>
<br>
I will be driving Jan over and then he has to get back to the airport by
about 3:30 so he will have to leave a little early--probably about
2:30--so you if you want to pick his brain you may want to show up
promptly to this event, which starts at 1:30pm. <br>
<br>
For anybody on the fence about whether to show up, this is your chance to
mob a real South African expert. <br>
<br>
Jan is one our most knowledgeable syncroists, very sophisticated, and an
impressive writer. <br>
<br>
I will also be making a preview announcement of vital importance to any
owner of a Vanagon or Syncro regarding a technical advance that has been
achieved to strengthen Vanagon and Syncro transmissions and prepare them
for longer life and for use with stronger motors. I should have a full
report on this matter to post to the list in the next two weeks. In my
view, after the implications of this material is understood here in North
America, there will be few owners who would willingly have their
transmission rebuilt without implementing some specific changes inside
the box, particularly if they ever contemplate putting in larger torque
motors. If you are thinking of having your transmission rebuilt in
the next few days, you may wish to wait before proceeding with that job
until you hear the full story. The applicability of this information is
to the rear unit only and does not affect the front differential.<br>

Subject: RE: [Syncro] tires for 16" wheels<br>
<br>
</font><font face="arial" size=2 color="#0000FF">Derek,
</font><font size=3><br>
<br>
</font><font face="arial" size=2 color="#0000FF">I guess we will have
some syncro owners checking out my 235/70/16 BFG Mud Terrians at the
Holiday Bus Fest Saturday, but for those that can't make it, it might be
good to add a point or two to the "all about"
page.</font><font size=3><br>
<br>
</font><font face="arial" size=2 color="#0000FF">The factory specs for my
BFG 235/70/16 Mud Terrain include a diameter of 29.2" and revs
per mile of 715, those specs are based on mounting on rims 7"
wide, as opposed to the wheels you supply, which are 6.5" wide.
Saturday we can actually measure the diameter and do an
update.</font><font size=3><br>
<br>
</font><font face="arial" size=2 color="#0000FF">First, syncro owners
should consider this spec the maximum for unmodified rear trailing arms.
The clearance is on average 3/16", but appears even tighter at
certain points. </font><font size=3><br>
<br>
</font><font face="arial" size=2 color="#0000FF">Second, remember that I
had to modify the rear part of my front wheel well to eliminate tire/body
contact. I cut out a piece, starting about 3/4" wide at the bottom
of the wheel well, tapering up to zero about 9 inches up well, more or
less. I saved the scrap, maybe we should post a photo of it to give
others an idea of what was iremoved.</font><font size=3><br>
<br>
</font><font face="arial" size=2 color="#0000FF">I guess the real point
is that with my installation I found the tires are too large to install
without any body modifications, but close. Perhaps an inch smaller in
diameter would result in no need to cut the body, and provide adequate
clearance at the rear trailing arms for -at least- cable type chains.
</font><font size=3><br>
<br>
</font><font face="arial" size=2 color="#0000FF">Specs of revs per mile
and diameter vary brand to brand, and even tire to tire (i.e., it doesn't
seem that you can necessarily do a direct computation of one from the
other, from my experience). You suggest - and I agree- that tires
with a minimum of 740 revs per mile are the largest make sense for stock
geared WBX powered vehicles. I think that rule of thumb also
defines about the biggest tire you can put on without expecting to also
modify the bodywork.</font><font size=3><br>

<dd>I updated the wheels article recently with some good choices I
noticed some people using. <br>
<br>
<dd>You can see them in the beginning of the tires section at
<a href="http://users.rcn.com/derekdrew/vanagon/All_About_16-Wheels_And_The_CV_900.htm" eudora="autourl">http://users.rcn.com/derekdrew/vanagon/All_About_16-Wheels_And_The_CV_900.htm</a>.
<br>
<br>
<dd>In particular, Nokian seems to consistently make tires in unusual
sizes that are suitable for the syncro's load bearing rating, and is
steadily coming out with new sizes and tires all the time. So I am very
impressed with the tire sizes available from that company. I also noticed
that there is a suitable Dunlop tire too. <br>

<dd>Now that some of you (I presume anyway) have the 16" wheels
supplied by
<dd>Derek Drew, I'm curious what your tire choices are. Especially those
of you
<dd>that are running stock engines and stock gearing and aren't after the
<dd>biggest diameter tires possible.<br>
