Sounds like Mark has done this more recently than I have, but I did
spend a couple hours one day (in '96 or so?) getting the linkage working
on my '81 air-cooled westy after the engine rebuild (I had pulled the
tranny and engine as a unit).
As I recall, I could readily find reverse on the transmission, and I
used a bungee cord to pull the shift lever as far as it would go towards
the driver. Tightened up that sliding joint in the middle of the
linkage and it worked. Took quite a few tries to find the right
combination of shifter location and transmission gear before the match
actually worked... I only hope I remember it right!
