The hitch will not have a problem with 300lbs directly over the box.
Keep in mind that as you extend a supported load behind the van the rear
axle increases more than the weight that is mounted. For example, 300lbs
1 ft behind the hitch may put 400lbs on the axle. I think you need to
decide which to take, the scooter or the bikes.

Subject: Sagging Rear and Hauling Scooter & Bikes
Volks -
I know this has been discussed considerably on the list, but I want to
run some things by you all and get your opinion. The rear of my
Vanagon sags about 3/4" to 1" depending on load. I would like to
correct this in the best long-term way possible. The springs in my 84
Wolfsburg Westy have never been replaced.
Additionally, I have a Dennis Haynes hitch which I use to carry
bicycles and am now considering using to haul my small motor scooter
(160 lbs.). What is the max (tung) weight for this vehicle/hitch combo?
If I want to carry the scooter and bikes at the same time should I
have a hitch in front and in rear or could the rear safely handle about
300 lbs. combined? Would having a scooter or bikes in the front
interfere with the rad. cooling?
With the above being considered, what is by best option for the the
saggy rear end? Should I:
- Use shims to level the van? Inexpensive option, but probably not
best for long term. I just did new Bilsteins all the way around and
the ride is excellent.
- Invest in airbags? May or may not correct sag and is also not a long
term solution. May be paired with new springs?
- New rear springs? More expensive, but good in the long term. Any
recommendations for manufacturers/vendors? I want to keep the ride as
it is now, but should I consider something heavy duty?
- New springs at all four corners? Expensive, but this is what I might
need to do.
- Setup and VCR in the garage and play "Buns of Steel" over and over
for the van until it straightens itself out?
So, please send me your recommendations for springs or other,
experiences, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Derek
