No part of the system should explode unless it is under inordinate pressure
(like boiling). So you'll need to look for where the water escaped from.
Might not be a hose. When this happened to me it was because idling with no
air flow through the radiator caused the system to boil and blew the top of
the expansion tank (not the filler tank behind the licence plate - but the
expansion tank in the engine compartment) Heat deformed the tank so I had to
get a used one.
Real issue is why didn't the fan come on to prevent the boiling. Answer in
my case - the guy who painted the van disconnected the harness at the
radiator and forgot to reconnect so it boiled. Plugged it back in and fan
worked normally.
No harm seems to have been done - that was 40,000km ago.
