Perhaps you are reading something into what I wrote.
No where do I suggest using home-center roofing or guttering materials
to take the place of Evercoat Q-pads or 3M Silencer Strips. Go back and
read again.

The home-supply roofing/guttering stuff is not the same as automobile
soundproofing in the least.
It's like making the logical leap that since Castrol 20w50 and 2nd-press
olive oil are both "amber oily liquids" that they are interchangeable.
If you want your van to be quiet, take a trip to a local wrecking yard,
and piece through a demolished Mercedes, Lexus, Infinity or even (gasp)
a late model VW. Look carefully at the materials they use. Not how the
voids are filled. Note how they don't use rubberized roofing felt for
sound proofing (like VW used to).
Believe me, I tried to find inexpensive products for our re-do, but
don't sacrifice all of your hard work by using inferior materials.

The website mentions that the stuff is made from 'mineral-filled
asphalt.'
I went to FLoBuSS (Friendly Local Building Supply Store) and saw several
comparable products. One was a roll of aluminum-backed self-adhesive
asphalt about 6'' wide in a 25' roll (about $12). This is flexible roof
or
gutter patching. Another was an aluminum impregnated roof coating, also
asphalt based and silver in color (about $8 for a gallon). The last one
was
a glass-fiber impregnated roof coating which is asphalt-based and sounds
like this sound deadener stuff but you paint it on from a gallon can
(don't
remember the price).
I used the roll of aluminum-backed asphalt under my dash to insulate
from
the outside cold/heat. This helped to quell some of the annoying
tin-can
sound you hear when you knock on the outside metal just below the
windshield. It should also help in the summer to keep the front of the
cabin a little cooler. I plan to add this to the footwell area as well
to
shield from the radiator heat.
I may try the paint-on product and test it on assorted sheet-metal for
noise-absorbing qualities before applying in my Westy.
