Is this a used engine?
Those problems are serious. Bubbles in the coolant tank usually mean that
the cylinder head isn't sealed completely to the cylinder, leaking
combustion gases into the coolant jacket. This means the heads need to come
off. The oil leak probably is the seal, not too difficult, but the motor
must come out.
If it is a rebuilt, reject it NOW! It is no good!
Good luck,
Bill Knight

Hello everyone!! :-)
Here is the newest chapter in my 1985 1.9 L Vanagon. Well after two
months of waiting, the shop FINALLY finished putting in another engine
(still can't find anyone who can figure out why the distributor kept
pushing out of the block). Anyway, after it warms up a bit the idle is
erratic, however off idle it runs smooth and strong.
Another problem I'm having is, the coolant doesn't seem to be
circulating--he claimed to put two gallons of 'special' anti-freeze in
it but when I checked the reserve tanks, they had water in them--no
signs of anti-freeze! And it seems to be running hotter than it did
before. When I unscrewed the cap, there were bubbles present which
makes me believe that it wasn't bled right???
Now the biggie....it is leaking oil, and a lot of it!!! It looks like it
is coming from the rear of the block and running down where the case is
spilt on the bottom and onto the exhaust. The mechanic claimed to put a
new seal in it, could this be the villain??
I went back to the shop to complain, but it was closed due to the
heatwave we're experiencing up here in Northeast Pennsylvania. I'm
hoping some of you can give me some insight so when I go back tomorrow,
I have a better idea of what to say or hear from him.
Thanks for listening and helping me out!! Your help is very valuable
and greatly appreciated!!
Have A GREAT Day!!
Kevin
