That metal piece just kind of sits in there with its edges wedged between
the light housing and the opening over the tach/speedo. Mine came out once
while I was fiddling around. I managed to get it back in by using the other
one still intact above the speedo as a guide. I have no idea whether lack of
the piece will cause heat issues inside your instrument panel, but I would
doubt it.
