Leaf,
Check out Bulley's site with a HUGE amount of GREAT information on just
this subject. It's at:
http://www.bulley-hewlett.com/VWindex/
I've started doing mine, front of van first, to help with the quality of
the sound of my stereo. It's a royal pain to do it, but it makes a huge
difference in the tonal atmosphere of the van. I don't get a lot of
noise from the engine compartment of my '87 Westy and that's another
reason I started on the front.
One thing I haven't done yet, but will, is to pull the dash and put the
Dynamat on the sheet metal in the front. When it's raining, it gets
really noisy up there! It's really amazing to finish one door and
compare the sound of the two front doors slamming!
I think one of the major keys to doing this successfully, besides
heating the stuff and doing it when the weather is warm, is to be sure
the sheet metal is REALLY CLEAN before you put the Dynamat on.
Good luck and may the Patience Gods be with you!
