Well, Tobin, I suppose I should amend my note... my 93 Grand Cherokee had an
automatic retractable antenna that went up and down when I turned the car on
or off. But it broke off several times and was very expensive to replace.
However, my 98 GC came with the antenna I described... full length, one
piece, (seemingly) unbreakable... steel, I guess. It's great... radio gets
excellent reception (I've been told the long antennas pick up radio waves
much better than the little rubber ducky kind that also don't break), and
catching it on limbs, pedestrians' outstretched arms and low flying birds
has not been a problem. That as opposed to my vanagon antenna which is now
bent, but, thankfully, not broken. But one of these days, sure enough...

Maybe the US-spec Cherokees are different from those sold in Canada.
After reading your email a few minutes ago, I went out for a walk
looking for Cherokees to test the idea since I, too, would love to
find an unbreakable antenna for my vanagon.
I found six Grand Cherokees, all late 90s style. All of their
antennas broke right off before they could touch the hood. Oops. I
must say, though, that they *did* bend more than I would would have
expected before they broke off in my hand.
Oh well, if anyone *does* find a source of unbreakable antennas, let
me know. I still thinks it's a good idea.
