Subject: starter problem
Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
I have a problem w/ my starter on my 86 Westy Automatic where when i turn
the key i hear a high pitched squeeling noise but the engine does not turn
over. Usually after the second or third try the engine does turn over and
she starts right up. I assume that the problem could be with the solenoid
not fully engaging. I also had a thought that maybe the starter is'nt
getting enough juice upon turning the key and and therefore the solenoid is
not fully engaging. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Could i
"hotwire" the starter directly to a 12 Volt battery to test if it's not
getting enough juice. Can the solenoid be replaced on these starters or do
you have to replace the starter and solenoid.
I just got this Westy for $2000 out of the newspaper. Has a rebuilt motor
and trans but need much tlc before the maiden voyage. My advice for anyone
looking for a good deal on a Vanagon: Look in small local papers, not the
big ones and VW websites. The best deals are from sellers that don't know
the true value of these vehicles.
thanks,
