I have the same '82 air cooled ones in my back yard. I have now fitted them all
with this
VDO oil temp gauge. The best place for me is at the left of the steering column
on the vertical part of the dash board. I used a hole saw of the nearest but
smaller size of the thread and after made it exact size with a round file.
There is not much of a shoulder for fitting. On the engine I used that cover
that is for the strainer and held by two little bolts and has a rubber "O" ring
as sealer. About four inches in diameter or smaller. I just drilled a hole in
the middle of it and fitted the sender unit into it. The wire that goes to the
front is probably the most important! You need to have it run in some
protective tubing of a kind. It can cause fire with it's sparks when flips
around naked.
The gauge is well visible on the left of the column and is not in the way of
anything. Also it is hiding well and does not give the appearance of over
crowding and unprofessional junks being added. Does not alter the originality
of the whole thing. Also there is an other thing that would be good to add to
the monitoring gauges. And that is a head temp. gauge which would fit in the
same manner as it does for the one that is used for sending info to the
computer. I wander though if the same can be used to see temp. on the gauge
too. It would be good to find out from the List. Anyway if that can't be used
then we have to install an other one to the other side likewise. Only this
would run to the front to give visual reading. Gotcha?
