Subject: Alternator, thanks, final
My multi-meter is packed and 70 miles away, so I was left with the "school
of elimination". I had a spare set of brushes, popped them in, and viola,
electrons, moving under my command, as usual.
Thanks again for all the hints.

I may be teaching my gran to suck eggs here but did you know that a working
alternator should put out about 14.7v at 2000 (engine)RPM. Get your engine
running, stick a meter across the battery and check the reading. If the
alternator is not doing anything then the reading will be around 12v or
bellow.
