Subject: Blowout: Full Air Cond. Kit, genuine VW!
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
These are an incredible find and I only have 3 of them. I will almost
certainly never find anything like this again!
These are complete VW-dealer air conditioning kits, originally intended for
1982 vintage Vanagon Westfalia campers. Not just one or two pieces, but a
comprehensive kit.
Until 1986, VW air conditioning was dealer-installed. This is the kit that
VW sold to their U.S. dealers who wanted to install air conditioning in new
campers to put on their lots. It comes with everything the dealer got.
Interior trim and parts, York compressor, receiver-dryer, condensor, wiring,
hardware, probably 100 different parts, plus an instruction packet full of
diagrams, installation instructions, templates etc. Everything the dealer
needed to do the installation, it seems. It even comes with the promotional
hang-tag that the dealer affixed to the air conditioning unit, and the
single-page owners manual supplement that he placed inside the owners
manual of the new van once he completed the installation and put the van on
the lot. The main interior module mounts inside the camper's existing
overhead cabinet above the sofabed. Other parts go under the van, in the
engine compartment, etc. The compressor is intended for the aircooled 2
liter engine.
You could probably modify this to work in other vehicles if needed. I will
include an '83-85 SD508 compressor and a watercooled condensor in place of
the aircooled parts for $50 more, if desired. The compressor etc. were
basically the same as used on the later Bus air conditioning, so you might
be able to modify the unit to work in those, although some of the parts are
most certainly different than used in either a watercooled van or a bus.
Similarly, the interior mounting was a bit different for a non-westy (since
it lacked the overhead cabinet in the back), so modification might be needed
to mount this in a non-westy. As it sits, it's specifically designed by VW
for an aircooled Vanagon Westy. I'm not advising that you use it for other
applications, and can't guarantee compatability with anything else, but I
know there are some tinkerers on the list.
The distributor I got these from (who is well established, not a
fly-by-nighter) is guaranteeing that the main components work, when first
installed (provided of course that you install them relatively soon, not
months or years from now). Not sure how that would work, I suppose he'd
replace or repair any major parts that were bad, or refund minus shipping.
Since these units are brand new, I don't anticipate any such problems. The
units do appear complete. However, if minor bits are found to be missing
you're on your own. Beyond the importer's warranty that they're good, this
is an as-is sort of deal. Also, please do not ask me to break the kits up as
I will only sell each kit complete (except for the variation noted above).
These systems sold for about $2500 fifteen years ago, when they were last
available. My supplier sold several of them to an overseas account who sold
them for close to $4000 each, but after the container left for overseas he
discovered 3 more in his warehouse. It was not economical to ship 3 more
overseas separately, so I ended up getting them at a distress price.
Therefore they are $895 each plus shipping (which will probably be in the
$75 range within the continental US).
Please p-mail or call if interested. Because this is such a rare and
specialized item I will delay putting them on the website until list members
have had a shot at them. Like I said, there are only 3 to be had.
